Moving to a Different State While on SSI: What Los Angeles Claimants Should Know

Every year I get calls from SSI recipients who’ve already packed the moving truck – or just unpacked it – and suddenly realize they have no idea what the move means for their benefits. Moving states while on SSI in Los Angeles isn’t just a logistics question. It’s a legal and financial event that can cost you hundreds of dollars a month if you don’t handle it correctly. At Devermont & Devermont, we represent disabled Los Angeles residents at every stage of the SSI process, and state-to-state moves are exactly where wrong assumptions do real damage.

This article covers what happens to your benefits when you move, what California-specific protections you stand to lose, and what you’re legally required to do.

The Federal SSI Rate Is the Same Everywhere – But That’s Only Part of the Story

SSI is a federal program. If you’re not sure how SSI works, read our overview of what SSI is in Los Angeles. The base benefit rate – $994 per month for an individual in 2026 – is set by Congress and applies in every state. That part doesn’t change when you move.

What does change, often dramatically, is the state supplement on top of that federal base.

California operates one of the most generous State Supplementary Payment (SSP) programs in the country. In 2026, California SSI recipients receive an additional $239.94 per month in SSP, bringing the total to $1,233.94 per month for an individual. That supplement is real money you receive automatically as a California resident.

Most states don’t come close to that number. Several major destination states – including Arizona, Alabama, Mississippi, North Dakota, and West Virginia – pay no SSP at all. Recipients there get only the $994 federal rate. Move from Los Angeles to Phoenix and you’ve taken a $239.94 monthly pay cut on day one. That’s nearly $2,900 per year in income that simply disappears.

Before you finalize any plan for moving states while on SSI from Los Angeles, look up the SSP amount for your destination state. Some states offer modest supplements; most don’t.

What Happens to Medi-Cal When You Leave California

SSI approval in California automatically triggers Medi-Cal enrollment – no separate application, no waiting. It covers prescription drugs, specialist visits, hospitalizations, and mental health care without premiums for most recipients.

When you move out of California, that coverage ends. Medi-Cal is a California program. It doesn’t travel with you. Every state has its own Medicaid program, and SSI recipients generally qualify in most – but covered services and formularies vary. If you rely on specific medications or treating physicians, research your new state’s Medicaid before you move. Gaps in coverage can be medically dangerous and damaging to a pending claim.

As soon as you establish residency in a new state, contact that state’s Medicaid office and enroll. Don’t assume it happens automatically.

Moving States on SSI From Los Angeles: Your Obligation to Report

Under POMS GN 02613.000, you’re required to report address changes to the SSA promptly. Report the move to your local field office before you leave Los Angeles, and provide your new address as soon as it’s confirmed. Delays create overpayments – if the SSA keeps paying California SSP to a recipient who’s no longer in California, that money will have to be repaid. Overpayments are one of the ugliest problems in SSI administration, and the burden of challenging them falls on you.

Update your USPS address as well. Mail forwarding doesn’t reliably catch SSA notices, and a missed hearing notice or information request can have serious consequences.

Moving Within California: County Changes and What They Don’t Affect

If you’re moving within California – from Los Angeles to Sacramento, from Inglewood to Fresno, from South LA to the Inland Empire – your federal SSI payment and California SSP don’t change. County of residence doesn’t affect either amount.

You’re still required to notify the SSA of your new address. Different field offices serve different counties, and your case may be transferred. Make sure the SSA has your current address so notices reach you. Losing track of your case during a local move is a surprisingly common problem – and one that’s entirely avoidable.

Moving Into California: When the SSP Works in Your Favor

Not everyone reading this is leaving California. Some clients come to us after moving to Los Angeles from a state with little or no SSP, asking whether they now qualify for California’s supplement.

The answer is yes, once you establish California residency. The SSA administers California’s SSP on the state’s behalf and will adjust your payment after your residency is confirmed. If you’ve recently arrived in the Los Angeles area and you’re still receiving only the $994 federal rate, follow up with the SSA directly. Delays happen, and recipients who don’t follow up sometimes miss months of SSP they were entitled to.

The In-Kind Support and Maintenance Trap

Interstate moves often involve family. Maybe a relative has offered to take you in while you get settled in a new city. That arrangement – living rent-free – has direct SSI consequences that most people don’t know about until it’s too late.

Under POMS SI 00835.000, if someone else provides you with food or shelter for free, or at less than fair market value, the SSA treats it as In-Kind Support and Maintenance (ISM). Under the one-third reduction rule, living in another person’s household where you pay nothing for food and shelter can reduce your monthly SSI benefit by one-third of the federal benefit rate plus $20 – roughly $351 in 2026.

Add that to the loss of California’s $239.94 SSP, and the financial impact of moving in with a family member in another state can easily exceed $500 per month.

There are ways to structure living arrangements that minimize or eliminate ISM – paying a pro-rata share of household expenses or fair market rent. If you’re planning to move in with family, talk to an SSI attorney in Los Angeles before you sign anything.

International Travel and SSI: The 30-Day Rule

If your move involves any international travel – visiting family abroad before settling in a new city, or an extended stay outside the U.S. – know this: under 20 C.F.R. § 416.1603, SSI benefits are suspended if you leave the United States for 30 or more consecutive days.

Benefits don’t resume automatically upon your return. You must contact the SSA. Extended international travel isn’t just a personal decision when you’re on SSI – it’s a benefits decision with paperwork consequences.

If You Have a Pending Hearing and You’re Moving

If you have an SSI appeal pending – including a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge – and you’re moving to another state, don’t assume your case follows you seamlessly. You may also want to understand how the four levels of Social Security disability appeals work before relocating.

Under 20 C.F.R. § 416.1429, an ALJ hearing can be transferred to the office serving your new location, but only if someone requests it. Your attorney (or you, if unrepresented) must notify the hearing office of the move. Failing to do so can mean a hearing scheduled somewhere you can no longer reach, or critical notices sent to your old address.

If we represent you and you’re planning to move, tell us before you go. We’ll handle the update.

Does Moving Affect What Your Attorney Charges?

No. The federal fee cap applies everywhere – 25% of past-due benefits, up to $9,200, paid by SSA from your back pay (POMS GN 03940.003). Whether you’re in Los Angeles or relocating to Texas, the contingency structure stays the same. You pay nothing upfront and nothing if the case doesn’t succeed. Your attorney’s financial incentive is tied to your outcome, not your zip code.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I move from Los Angeles to another state, will my SSI payment go down?

Almost certainly, yes. California’s $239.94 monthly SSP supplement brings the total to $1,233.94 for an individual. Most other states pay little or nothing on top of the $994 federal rate. Moving to a state with no SSP means your income drops to $994 – the SSA makes that adjustment once it processes your address change.

How quickly do I need to report my new address to SSA?

As soon as possible. POMS GN 02613.000 requires prompt reporting. Delays can generate an SSP overpayment you’ll have to repay. Notify the SSA when your new address is confirmed, and update your USPS mailing address as well.

I moved to California from another state. When do I start receiving California’s SSP?

Once you establish California residency, you’re eligible for the SSP. Follow up with the SSA to confirm the supplement has been added – delays happen, and you don’t want to miss months of payments you were entitled to.

I’m moving in with my daughter in another state rent-free. Does that affect my SSI?

Yes. Living rent-free triggers ISM rules under POMS SI 00835.000, which can reduce your SSI by roughly one-third of the federal benefit rate plus $20. Combined with losing California’s SSP, total monthly income can drop by $500 or more. Talk to an attorney before you finalize that arrangement.

I have an ALJ hearing scheduled in Los Angeles but I’m moving to another state. What happens?

Under 20 C.F.R. § 416.1429, the hearing can transfer to the office serving your new location – but it’s not automatic. Notify your attorney or the hearing office as soon as the move is confirmed.

Does moving out of California affect my Medi-Cal?

Yes. Medi-Cal ends when you leave California. SSI recipients generally qualify for Medicaid in most states, but enrollment isn’t automatic – contact the new state’s Medicaid agency as soon as you arrive. Research coverage before you move if you have ongoing medical needs or specific prescriptions.

What if I travel internationally for more than a month – do I lose SSI?

Yes. Under 20 C.F.R. § 416.1603, SSI suspends if you leave the U.S. for 30 or more consecutive days. Benefits don’t resume automatically – you must contact the SSA when you return. Plan accordingly before any extended international trip.

Talk to an SSI Attorney Before You Move

Moving states while on SSI from Los Angeles is complicated enough without discovering – after the fact – that you’ve lost $500 a month you didn’t know you’d lose. The SSI rules around interstate moves, state supplements, living arrangements, and Medi-Cal aren’t intuitive. They’re the kind of rules that blindside people who assume their benefits will simply follow them.

At Devermont & Devermont, we represent Los Angeles SSI claimants at every stage of the process and we advise clients on benefit-affecting decisions before they become expensive mistakes. Consultations are free, we work on contingency, and you pay nothing unless we win.
